Abstract

This study explores the context and patterns of interactions in supporting self-determination of people with cognitive limitations, such as people with developmental disabilities and elderly people with dementia. To this end, this study extracted the components of the support process for self-determination of developmental disabilities(intellectual and autistic disabilities) and applied context-pattern analysis to derive the context and pattern of self-determination support.
To this end, in this study, the components of self-determination support were extracted through related literature and theories such as Deci and Ryan(1985)¡¯s ¡®Self-Determination Theory(SDT)¡¯, Wehmeyer(1999)¡¯s ¡®A functional model of self-determination¡¯, Avery and Stancliffe's ¡®An ecological theory of self-determination¡¯, etc. In addition, in-depth interview materials of five disabled people and five caregivers were used to extract additional components. Based on this, the components were reconstructed by using context-pattern analysis.
As a result, four contexts(continuous context, relational context, intrinsic context, principle and foundation) and patterns(understanding preferences and needs, providing information, choicemaking, deliberation, subjective decision support, reflux) of self-determination support were derived. Based on the results of this study, we hope that the results of this study can be used as a more practical basis in supporting self-determination of people with developmental disabilities in the future.
